Three things to NEVER wear to Thanksgiving

Holiday gatherings are filled with family, love, and food- lots and LOTS of food! Here’s the dilemma: you want to look cute AND comfortable when feasting on Grandma’s turkey. And you not have to sacrifice one for the other. What you wear can be just as important as what you are piling upon your plate.

Here are a three things to NEVER wear on Thanksgiving (or any other family gathering) so you won’t regret your outfit three slices into apple pie or miss out on an impromptu game of flag football.

Show some holiday love this “Small Business Saturday”

Thanksgiving is only 15 days away- the official beginning of Christmas shopping madness. I am happy to say that I began hunting for gifts in March- no last minute craziness for me, although I do enjoy it.

However, this season I vowed to shop a little differently. I want to purchase the majority of my Christmas gifts from local businesses.

Small Business Saturday, the Saturday following Thanksgiving, was created as a counterpart to the Black Friday and Cyber Monday. It is a day created to support local businesses that create jobs and boost the economy. “For every $100 spent at a local business, $68 returns to the community,” states Civic Economics.

Embrace the cape!

With the winter chill arriving in Minnesota quicker than I hoped, I needed a new way to stay warm and fashionable. I love my down feather Calvin Klein coat, however, it becomes quite monotonous when worn every single day. I wanted to switch it up occasionally- try a new trend other than a long black coat.

I have already seen several women on the street flaunting their flowing capes (or as some might call a poncho). Could this new fad be the piece of clothing to break up my chilly day boredom?

Date night deserves a little bit of fabulous

I cannot rave enough about how fabulous I felt going on out for date night in this outfit. As much as I love to wear my sleek LBDs and stilettos, the weather was not permitting. The (faux) fur vest adds a bit of flair and warmth during the cold nights walking downtown, and the pleather pants keep everything exciting. Add the Coach wedges and statement necklace for perfect finishing touches.

Don’t let winter cramp your style!

My biggest problem during the winter months is how to express my personality and fun outfits while wearing oversized coats and clunky boots. My down-filled Calvin Klein winter jacket and furry Sorels get boring quite quickly. I love them dearly, they are the warmest pieces of clothing I own. However, with -40 wind chills in “Minnesnowta” I cannot afford to get frostbite because I want to wear that stylish olive green unlined jacket hanging in my closet.

Even though my black sleeping bag coat and snow boots are a necessity, I can still sneak in a pop of color and pattern. Here’s how I overcome Mother Nature and add some flair to my usually mundane winter uniform…

Bundled in (faux) fur

Winter allows for oversized snow boots, a plethora of scarfs, and lots of (faux) FUR! This gorgeous fur find was a holiday discount from Charlotte Russe. I stumbled upon it while frantically pushing through crowds to return a single pair of extra-extra small mittens two days after Christmas. Probably not the best day to do so, but I knew it would never get done otherwise. Good thing I went or else I wouldn’t have found this gem for $15!
